Bruce E. Mapes, PhD
Highly regarded Psychologist and Child Custody Evaluator or just another ASS.
You decide! |
We have all been reading about the difficulties that parents have experienced with Bruce E. Mapes, Ph.D. For each of you that has posted information about your experience with Dr. Mapes thank you and please know that your posts are helping parents and even lawyers combat the trash this man puts forth as “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth”. He has perpetrated a major fraud on the Chester County Court of Common Pleas, has misrepresented the truth by taking what parents and children and twisting it to fit his purposes, has ongoing discussions with lawyers associated with your custody matter, and practices from his own version of ethics.
Unfortunately, he continues to hurt people, destroys family relationships and empowers the Courts to make decision based on fabricated information as included in his reports. It is very clear to me; a person who has suffered through one of his so called child custody evaluations, that Dr. Mapes does not have a clue just how awful he is at the practice of psychology. This is due in part to his lack of ethical commitment, his not taking seriously the responsibility he has to the Court as an appointed expert and his need to maintain a lifestyle. Every time he is appointed as an expert to the Court he has a great money making opportunity – he could care less about you or your children. He is a dangerous person and needs to be forced out as an expert witness for the Chester County Court of Common Pleas.
Many of you have talked about how shocked you were when you reviewed Dr. Mapes evaluation report. You spoke about your words being taken out of context, turned and twisted, information being ignored, omitted or otherwise discounted. Most have had the shared experience of taking the MMPI test in a common area (kitchen/copy room) and told to leave personal information in an unattended area while Mapes “stepped out”. For some of you, we have had the opportunity to compare notes about the brevity of the interview process lasting not too much longer than 1 hour; with other we spoke of asinine questions Mapes asked during your interviews; with others we compared notes on the questions he asked and found that the questions that he asked of each of us were the same and in the same order; most of you commented on what a lousy interviewer Dr. Mapes is; most of you commented that you felt that Dr. Mapes did not listen to key information that you presented either in writing or during the cours of the interview. Some of you have pointed out that Dr. Mapes is not consistent in his recitation of his qualifications and others have presented that Dr. Bruce E. Mapes violated your civil rights by releasing information outside of the court order and without your consent. As one or the persons stated and many of you have agreed “Dr. Mapes is a HACK”.
In an effort to help parents who have yet to have the pleasure of meeting face to face with Dr. Mapes, I think it is important to post the questions that he asked of me during my interview with him. It is difficult for me to understand how Dr. Mapes fulfills his obligation to the Court as an “expert” and how he is able to advise the court on a “matter of law” from the very simple questions he asked. As I review these questions I am struck by the absence of interview content on the parental bond between parent and child, the quality of relationship between parent and child and the total lack of content as to the emotional supports that the child receives from the parent. It appears to me that the interview process employed by Dr. Mapes is nothing more than a cookie cutter approach to very complex issues and that he is a very poor and unskilled interviewer.
Based on the questions that Dr. Mapes asked during my interview (as listed below) it is very clear that Mapes is biased in his approach, probably highly influenced by an attorney who has filled him in on the issues prior to or during the evaluation process. In short, Dr. Mapes is nothing more than a hired gun that will craft a report that assures that he gets additional referrals or that he is called as a paid expert to review his report. He is not objective, unbiased and does not follow the facts as presented in written document or information presented in during the interview. It is very clear that Dr. Mapes had his mind made up from the initial appointment from the Court. While many see him as a widely respected “professional” the more accurate view should be as a professional that cashed out ethically many years ago. The “truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth” concerning Bruce E. Mapes, PhD will come out and many will be shocked.
The information that follows are the exact questions that Dr. Mapes asked of me during the course of my child custody evaluation and in the exact order in which they were asked. Names have been changed to protect the innocent. In some areas I have added a direct quote from his Report an insert to emphasis the point of how Dr. Mapes twists and turns information to the point where it becomes dishonest and false reporting on his part.

Dr. Mapes – that’s not what was asked.
|
Specific Instructions given by Dr. Mapes for taking the MMPI. Ok, what you want to be doing is just reading each of these questions and marking it true or false for yourself. For example: I like mechanics magazine, OK. When you finish one page, go to the next and keep going till you do all the questions. Now as you can see the instructions are right here. As you are finished, I’ll ask you to put your information right here. Sometimes, peoples ask what the author means, it how you interpret the question. Be as candid as you can, I do not look at each individual item, it just produces the overall profile. OK?

| These are the very insightful questions that a highly skilled psychologist and seasoned child custody evaluator put together to assess my parental capacity and to determine if I am capable of forming and maintaining a bond with my two children. From these interview questions he would advise the Court if I was able to enjoy custody and visitations with my children. I hope you can see just how bogus Dr. Mapes interview process is and that anything he writes is concerning custody is highly suspect. His final report was replete with errors of fact (even though the facts were submitted in writing), significant falsifications of what I said, and significant omissions of facts in favor of the other parent. His recommendations were inconsistent with current clinical literature and dare I say inconsistent with the education that he provided (handouts bear his name) to the members of the Chester County Family Court division.

As you know the PA law has changed with respect to child custody. The new custody rules may limit the damage Bruce E. Mapes, Ph.D. can cause as child custody evaluation may not be a big part of the new process.
Let’s only hope that Bruce E. Mapes, Ph.D. drys up and blows away. He surely seems ethically bankrupt and morally challenged and should not be involved in any part of the child custody determination process.
Sorry, Bruce E. Mapes, PhD I have to vote ASS.
Dr Mapes used the exact same questions during my custody evaluation. Recently a friend of mine had an evaluation done by a different evaluator(Stephen Miksic out of Norristown), he spent a total of 10 hours interviewing both parents and turned out a detailed 40 page report they have 1 child. Dr. Mapes spent about an 1 1/2 interviewing and puts out 15 page report, half of which is copied from the intake statements provided; for 3 children involved. That’s a very large discrepancy.
Dr. Mapes makes a healthy living off these custody evaluations. The best way to correct this is take business from him. If you come across anyone( family, friends, lawyers, masters). going through a custody evaluation for Family Court in Chester County-recommend they use someone else.
As I said before he is a hack, I directed one person to stay away fom him. If business goes away so does Dr. Mapes!!!
Bruce Mapes asked me the same questions too. He nodded off during my brief interview and after one hour meeting with me he put in his report he can’t rule out a personality disorder. He clearly is at the whim of the attorneys he feels he can get the most money for. My son met with him and told him his father lied and didn’t do anything with him and Dr. Mapes brushed it off as Father is more strict.
What a horrible horrible person Dr. Mapes is.
JB, I like to think that there will be a special place in hell for Bruce Mapes. He offers his ethics and morals to the highest bidder – usually the attorney he thinks will send more business his way. Was the opposing attorney Stephen I. Baer or Joanne Piskoff? They are birds of a feather who all seem to have a cozy relationship with one another. It would not surprise me if they were not lots of money exchanging hands – pimp and whore type of arrangement.
Sorry to hear of your crappy experience with Dr. Mapes. If you think he violated his professional ethics you should file a complaint with the American Psychological Asociation. They have an ethics department and it costs you nothing to file a complaint. In fact I encourage you to report your experience via a complaint. This is the only way to stop this ass. Your should also consider making a complaint with the Office of Professional Compliance in Harrisburg. Again it cost you zero. For Mapes it costs him time and money to undergo the investigation. Any money he has to spend to defend himself is a good thing. The more we who have been taken advantage of by Mapes need to keep the pressure on so that perhaps he’ll get caught at his dirty little game.
He is pure scum.
do you have a report from him. i will see him at trial.please send to sscheuerle@dverdict.com
Here is an interesting question that you should ask yourself before entering a child custody evaluation with Bruce Mapes. Is he an expert in child psychologist, child development or parental/child relationships.
The sad truths that Bruce Mapes is NOT a trained child psychologist. Sure he too a class or two, as we all do, in child development, but that does not make him an expert. Look at his career – he’s an psychologist with a long history of specializing in exalting sex offenders. So what does exalting sex offenders have to do with child custody? What makes him an expert with custody matters?
Beware. He is nothing but a hired gun who lacks training in the field of child psychology and has not defined his career as a child psychologist. Would you go to a foot doctor for heart surgery. Both are doctors but that’s all they have in common.
WOW! I just had some very uncomfortable feelings as I read all of this. I went through this process w/ Mapes. I understood the “power” that he had in the decision making during my custody process, this was about 3 yrs ago. That cat was a nightmare. I did rcv 50% custody and as a Dad in PA, I did not hink I would only get to see my child every other weekend..which would have been devasting to my child and our family. I am sorry for anyone who is an honest person and a loving parent that has to be exposed to Mapes, he is a dirtball.
ChescoDad, he is a dirt ball. Anyone exposed to this guy realizes that his version of the truth is very warped. He sells his words to the highest bidder, that is who has the money or which attorney group has the most potential for referrals. Glad things turned out for you.
This man is a fraud and should not be in the practice of psychology or conducting child custody evaluations. He is not a child psychologist by training or by practice definition. He fabricates statements and attributes them to parents dispite written materials submitted to him in advance. In many instances he discounts what children say as he does not think they. Are telling the truth including when a child states they have been sexually abused by a parent. Somehow he continues to avoid being caught with his bold faced lies and misrepresentation of the truth. Dr. Mapes, you will be caught. Many parents have learned about your unprofessional conduct and are standing up for their rights.
2 questions for all:
1. Is anyone aware of a process to request another evaluator before the interviews commence?
2. Is it allowable to bring a voice/video recorder into the interviews?
Thanks!,
Anonymous Dad
Here is a quick and sound answer about the sound recorder. You are not allowed to tape the interview with out his consent. If you do so on the sly it will be a very very serious problem if caught and you will not be able to use the information in a legal setting. Just don’t do it unless you have the consent of the bozo. There is nothing against the rules that would allow you to take notes but realize it will piss him off and he will no doubt take out his ire out on you. He after all takes notes and if the truth were known he records his interviews. You should up font ask him if he is taping the interview. You will be surprised how he will use long passages of whet you said and put quotes around it. There is no way this old martini drinking man has the ability to remember what was said.
Use the info on this and other posts to your advantage. Remember the best defense is to be prepared. Try to stick to the information in the written materials you submitted. If the content of your responses is well documented and supported by other materials he’ll have a hard time twisting your words. Be very careful. This is a very dangerous fellow.
In terms of asking for another evaluator, you will need to show just cause for the evaluator to be changed, the court will have to approve and the other party agree to the change. In short your probably stuck with this hack. If you have an attorney, by all means talk to him/her about your concerns.
Be on the look out for this guy to try to suck in other unrelated information. Remember this is an evaluation on your ability to form and maintain relationships with your kids and how this spins out to fulfill the best interest of kids. If there are concerns about the other party doing crazy things be prepared to document these concerns so they are on the record of materials submitted to this ass hole. If possible, when he leaves you in the copy room, try to get a copy of the mmpi answer form. This is the only time you or anyone else will see the this. The courts put a lot of stock in this but he scores and reports the results in a non standard manner. Be prepared for the most simplistic interview you ever had.
Let’s chat. Good luck
Iam going to cross examine this expert at trial in two weeks. If anyone has a report or helppful information such as wether he tape records interviews it would be very appreciated. Stephen S.
Good luck! I hope you can catch this unethical professional to the wall. Catch him at his game of twisting the truth, manipulating the fact to his favor and end the gravy train. This guy is dangerous and need to be stopped.
“At the top of his profession: a renowned forensic psychologist who in court could determine which parent got custody of a child, or whether a jury believed a claim of sexual assault. Trouble is, he built his career on hypocrisy and lies, and as a result, he destroyed lives, including his own…”
The above vignette occurred in the case of a very famous child custody evaluator, a university professor and leader in the field of psychology. He taught growing professionals as well as licensed professionals how to conduct child custody evaluations. His professional experience was beyond reproach, yet…he lied to and mislead the Courts.
Parents In the State where the psychologist in the vignette practiced and conducted child custody evaluations are now suing his estate for settlements ranging from fee recovery to millions in damages. The approach is on the basis of breach of contract based on the recently discovered lies and deceptions.
In this post many people have offered insight into their experiences with Dr. Mapes. Many have offered very detailed information about the twisted and convoluted information that was included in you child custody evaluation. Some have offered very direct complaints to the Courts, the professional licensing board, and even the American Psychological Association. For many you addressed issues that very specific information was either ignored or outright discounted. Some have offered information about your children being sexually abused by your spouse, yet this information was totally discounted.
To what extent can the complaints against Dr. Mapes continue to go unrecognized. Do parents need to have a sentinel event, such as a child driven to suicide as a result of a custody recommendation, before the Court or the DA take some actions to investigate the psychologist.
Here are some though provoking questions:
1) How does this makes you feel as a parent who has experienced a child custody evaluation.
2) What should the course of action be for parents who have experienced falsehoods and deceptive practices during the course of your child custody evaluation”?
3) What issues need to be presented to elected officials in Chester County about your experiences?
Iam going to cross examine this doctor at trial in two weeks. do you have a report. sscheuerle@dverdict.comn
how did you make out with the cross examination of Dr. Mapes during the custody trial you mentioned
Hey folks, this guy Bruce Mapes has a PhD but guess what? it’s NOT in psychology. It’s in education, BUT not in educational psychology. Wow, Some expert we have here.

I blame him but this is a woman (Tina Simmers) who can’t raise her own kids but wants to raise all her grandkids?? Really??
Not to mention lost custody of her kids when they were teens because they begged their Father and Grandmother to take them after dragging their Mother Tina Simmers out of the bars in town every night! This woman should not be allowed to even ask a judge for a hearing let alone attempt to gain custody of animal let alone a child!
This post is not about Tina. If you want to make comments about Tina suggest you ask that a new post be started.
Dr. Mapes performed a custody evaluation for me recently. I am a mom of a young son with special needs. My husband, who has absolutely no business raising a child, got 50% custody. I had painstakingly submitted detailed answers to the questions Mapes wanted filled out before sessions began and even provided proof of many concerns I had regarding my husband.
When I finally met with Dr. Mapes, he talked to me for less than an hour asking the same questions I read above in many of your posts. I think in all, Dr. Mapes spent less than two hours with me.
I recently received my report. I could not believe how he left out information regarding my husband’s character, twisted things that I said, flat out wrote things that I never said, and included lies my husband told about me that he could not possibly have had any proof of, because it never happened. Reading Mapes’ report, we both sound equally horrible–which is not the case.
What can be done now? Go to trial? I’ve heard the courts will go with whatever the evaluator recommends. Is this it? I have grave concerns for my little guy when he is with his father. Have any of you tried to appeal Dr. Mapes’ recommendations?
It is a shame that the Court does not understand (or even care) just how bad Bruce E. Mapes is at doing these evaluations and how biased he is in his reporting. He is indeed a hack.
What is so troubling about is that he does not spend sufficient time to get a full understanding of the dynamics that are happening in the family or the relationships that exist between and amount the parties. It is impossible to get a full understand in the course of an hour interview even if supplemented by a questionnaire.
It is a good thing that you spent the time upfront answering his questions on the questionnaire as this may serve as proof of his bias when you file a complaint with the State Board of Psychology. You will need to prove that his interview was not sufficient to make the determination he made, and that he was biased in applying the facts. The major complaint that everyone here has had is that he twists and manipulates the facts even from the written materials. This is a very dangerous fellow as he is often unchallenged in what he writes. If he is asked to correct the information in the report he will not do so – it all neatly stated in the informed consent form you signed.
You should file a complaint with the PA Department of State, Office of Professional Compliance but realize that this will take a long time to be addressed and will not undo the custody determination. Taking this step with a well organized complaint, supported by proof and real facts, will help other parents down the road. This fellow has to be stopped.
As far as going to court. Think about this for a while and understand the risks. The Court can take Mapes report/recommendations without question or it can make their own recommendations. It can also postpone making a decision and require an additional evaluation by Mapes at a later time. The reality is that you will end up with a 50/50 custody arrangement and will spend a ton of money.
Your only hope in going to Court is to prove Mapes was biased and that he lied about the facts of the case. Here is the major issue in doing that . He was appointed to issue an expert opinion, not to provide the facts. Opinion witness can hold any opinion they wish so long as their opinion is based on some basis – even if is unrealistic.
accept the report, file a well documented complaint with the liciencing board and hope for the best.
Great post. I used to be checking constantly this blog and I’m inspired! Extremely helpful info specially the final section
I maintain such info a lot. I used to be looking for this particular info for a very lengthy time. Thanks and good luck.

Jacke, I wish you well in your upcoming evaluation with Bruce Mapes. Be sure to keep a record of what you submit (in writing) to the doctor as you may need it when he twists things, takes things out of context. You will be surprised when you read his final report and be left wondering if he was reporting on your situation or someone else.
Here is what I think will happen: The good doctor will recommend joint custody and see nothing wrong with leaving the child with unsupervised visits with your ex husband. The circumstances of the drug house will be overlooked, and the child being left unattended will be minimized. He will suggest that the father loves his child and continued unsupervised visits would be important to help him maintain a relationship. The issues of danger will not be discussed, and you to some extent will vilified for attempting to deny the father his right to visitation and an ongoing relationship (even if that is not the case).
If the Judge were really wise he would have referred you to a different child custody evaluator. The one your going to soon see is a total hack. Look the court can make the decision on their own, but don’t. Mfor some reason theynthinkmthat the evaluation gives them insight into the best Interest of the child, however, if the report is all based on half truths and a good bit of confabulation, then one has to wonder what value it is to the Court. Truly the only one that makes our in the evaluation process is Bruce Mapes.
Hang on you are in for a rough ride with this so called expert. Good luck.
Had to go back to Bruce Mapes for a second time same results, Nothing negative about me just suspicious conclusions on his part.
Under the circumstances the suspicious conclusions are infact negatives that can be asked about in court. The door was opened.
How long was ur interview?
